Waya Island Resort & Spa – An Adults-Only Escape in Fiji
Sometimes the best trips are the ones you don’t plan. When our Fijian cruise was cancelled just days before departure, my travel agent/boss Janine Mallon scrambled for an alternative and stumbled across Waya Island Resort & Spa in the Southern Yaskawa’s. What began as a backup quickly turned into one of the most magical holidays we’ve ever had. By the time we left, we were already planning how to return, it was that hard to say goodbye.
Facilities – Everything at Your Fingertips
From the moment we arrived, the resort felt like a haven of calm. The pool, dining, reception, and activities area were spotless, well-presented, and inviting.
We took full advantage of the complimentary equipment, snorkelling gear, kayaks, and paddleboards. Having these available anytime meant exploring was easy and spontaneous. While a couple of paddleboards were missing fins (a little wobbly to use!), Api, one of the ever-helpful staff, was quick to assist and make sure we were comfortable.
Snorkelling – A World Beneath the Waves
The reef just to the right of the boat entrance was buzzing with life. Even near the lagoon’s rock walls, where visibility was lower, schools of fish darted around us. Once out on the reef, the scene shifted to vibrant corals and sponges, with crystal-clear visibility often stretching 30–50 metres.
Some guests cleverly kayaked out, tied up to buoys, and snorkelled further afield, an efficient way to cover more reef without tiring yourself out.
We also joined a guided snorkelling trip, which turned out to be unforgettable. The boat took us north of Waya Island, where massive coral structures rose beneath us and then, a thrilling encounter: a 2m leopard shark gliding gracefully our way. My squeals of excitement may have scared it off, but the moment is etched in memory forever.
The Staff – Heart of the Resort
If the setting was paradise, the staff made it feel like home. Milly, Sulu, Api, Bill, Emma, Jerry, Moji, and many others who were working around the resort and I wish I could recall, were simply wonderful. Warm, welcoming, always ready with a smile or a laugh, they elevated every part of our stay. Their kindness made our trip truly unforgettable.
Accommodation – Thoughtful Touches Everywhere
Celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary at Waya Island Resort felt extra special thanks to a touching surprise from the housekeeping team: a “Happy Anniversary” message spelled out in leaves. The effort and thought behind it left me feeling overwhelmed with gratitude.
Our room had everything we needed, a super-comfy bed, perfectly working air-conditioning, and even homemade cookies with plunger coffee. The outdoor shower quickly became a favourite feature, though the hot water was occasionally temperamental. We mentioned it on checkout, but honestly, it didn’t detract from the experience, it just added to the rustic charm.
Food & Drinks – Dining Done Right
The food here deserves its own applause. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted just as good as it looked. Pizzas were flavourful, breakfasts perfect portion (yes, you can order more than one dish if you need!), lunches two courses, and dinners a full three.
Meal planning is simple: at breakfast you order your lunch, and at lunch your dinner. Twice a week, however, chefs prepare special menus. We were lucky enough to be there on Friday Island Night, which included a traditional yaqona (kava) ceremony, a lavish Fijian feast, live singing, birthday celebrations, and even a cake for our anniversary. Long communal tables made it a night of shared laughter and new friendships. On other nights, we enjoyed more intimate private tables for two.
The Beach – Crabs, Rockpools & Pure Relaxation
The coral beach was alive with activity, ghost crabs scuttling sideways, hermit crabs on the move, and fish flashing through the shallows. At low tide, one half of the beach revealed fascinating rockpools to explore, while the other remained submerged and perfect for snorkelling.
For lazy afternoons, hammocks swayed in the breeze, loungers lined the sand, and shaded tables made the perfect spot for a cocktail or coffee. Whether active or relaxed, there was always a place to be.
Final Thoughts – A Place We’ll Never Forget
What started as a cancelled cruise turned into one of the most memorable trips of our lives. Waya Island Resort & Spa gave us not just a holiday, but a heartfelt experience filled with beauty, warmth, and joy.
We left with full hearts, incredible memories, and a promise to return. We’ve already recommended this adults-only escape to friends and we’ll continue to do so. If you’re looking for a truly special getaway in Fiji, look no further.
