Next, it’s on to the Asakusa, to explore Temple Sensoji Temple, a 1400-year-old Buddhist temple dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Afterwards, pay a visit to the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine and the famous Shibuya Crossing, the world's busiest intersection, before returning to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure. You may wish to join an optional sushi making workshop with a Japanese chef and learn about Japanese food culture or take a Taiko drumming lesson and gain insight into these traditional drums before creating your own performance (both an additional expense).

After breakfast, journey to Hakone to visit the picturesque Hakone Shrine known for its iconic red torji gate standing on the shores of Lake Ashi. Surrounded by lush forests and scenic views of Mount Fuji on a clear day, the shrine was very popular among samurai during the twelfth century and is hidden away in a dense forest. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then head to Hakonemachi where you will board a boat taking you to Togendai. Both are ports on the shores of Lake Ashi, which is in fact an enormous volcanic crater created by an eruption 3,000 years ago. Afterwards, arrive in Togendai and continue your journey via Ropeway heading towards Owakudani. There are walking trails around Owakudani that lead to steam vents and bubbling pools surrounding this active volcano.

Transfer to Tokyo station for a high-speed bullet train bound for Kyoto. From there journey to the nearby town of Arashiyama. Discover Tenryuji Temple, a historic Zen temple known for its beautiful garden and UNESCO World Heritage status. It exemplifies traditional Japanese architecture and serene natural surroundings. Next, savour time in the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Stroll through the towering bamboo grove and marvel at one of the most breathtaking and iconic sites in all of Japan before seeing Nonomiya Shrine, a Shinto shrine where in ancient times, unmarried imperial princesses stayed for a year or more to purify themselves. The shrine is referenced in numerous works of literature, most notably in the world’s first novel; The Tale of Genji.

After breakfast, transfer to Fushimi. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine. Featured in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”, this shrine is known for its thousands of red torii gates leading up and through the sacred forest of Mount Inari and has been voted the number one must see spot in Kyoto by visitors. Then head to Nara, Japan’s capital for 74 years during the 8th century and home to many temples and shrines built in that era. Visit Todaiji Temple, one of the world’s largest wooden structures and home to Japan’s largest Buddha. The park surrounding the temple is called Nara Park but is referred to by many as “Deer Park” due to the large population of more than one thousand tame deer who freely roam the streets and will bow their heads in exchange for a treat. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha. Established in 768 AD the shrine is dedicated to the deity tasked with the protection of the city and is famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshippers over the years.
