Ushuaia Short Break

So much more than just a launch pad for Antarctic expeditions, Ushuaia and its surrounds offer a whole lot to adventurous travellers. And the best bit? You only need a day to experience the highlights of the region. Join a local guide and journey into the wild landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park where you’ll hike, canoe and dine on the riverbank in a heated dome (a glass of Malbec and epic views included). You don’t have to travel to the ends of the earth for an adventure, but if you’re after awe-inspiring, untouched scenery, it’s certainly worth the trip.

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Ushuaia, Argentina – the world’s southernmost city. While it’s a jumping off point for Antarctic voyages, the city is also well worth exploring. With no activities planned for today, you’re free to arrive at any time. You may like to visit the Museo del Fin del Mundo (End of the World Museum), where you can learn about the region’s history as a hub for explorers and browse historical wildlife exhibits and Indigenous artefacts. If you’re after any last-minute essentials before departing, take a stroll down Avenida San Martin.

Rise early this morning and fuel up for the day’s activities over breakfast. You’ll be picked up from the lobby between 8 and 8.30 am. Then, drive to Tierra del Fuego National Park, where you’ll start by stretching your legs and getting to know the surroundings with a walk along a coastal path. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for a special lunch on the banks of the Lapataia River, served in a heated dome tent. Soak up the scenic views and tuck into the local ingredients (accompanied by Malbec wine, of course!). After, gear up with rubber boots, waterproof over pants and lifejackets, then hop aboard inflatable canoes and paddle from Lake Acigami along the Lapataia and Ovando rivers until you reach the sea in Lapataia Bay. Later, you’ll return to Ushuaia in the early evening and be dropped off at your hotel with plenty of time to join the briefing for your Antarctic expedition on the Ocean Endeavour.

This itinerary has been designed for passengers travelling to Antarctica on board the Ocean Endeavour, embarking in Ushuaia. The trip concludes at your Ocean Endeavour hotel in time to join the group briefing for your voyage. This trip is operated by one of our local partners in Argentina and therefore you may be joined by a mixture of Intrepid-booked passengers and other travellers during activities.
