After breakfast, journey to Arashiyama to explore Tenryuji temple, ranked by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In addition to its temple buildings, there are beautiful gardens with walking paths. Next, discover Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves. Bamboo has been used to manufacture various products, such as baskets, cups, boxes, and mats at local workshops for centuries. Arrive at Nonomiya shrine, a Shinto shrine that is referenced in numerous works of literature, most notably in the world’s first novel; The Tale of Genji.

After lunch, continue to Kinkakuji by private coach. Arrive at UNESCO-listed Kinkakuji, otherwise known as the Golden Pavillion, a stunning Zen temple with a golden exterior, serene gardens and historical significance. Afterwards, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine. Featured in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha,” this shrine is known for its thousands of red torii gates leading up and through the sacred forest of Mount Inari and has been voted the number one must see spot in Kyoto by visitors. Be transported back to your hotel in Osaka.

Visit Osaka Expo ‘70 Park, one of the biggest green areas in the Kansai region, well-known because of remaining features like the Tower of the Sun monument created by world-famous artist Taro Okamoto. Then visit Osaka Castle, the largest castle in Japan when first built in 1583. Ritsurin Garden is the largest Cultural Property Garden in all of Japan and is an important cultural asset that has been maintained for nearly 400 years. Originally created in the Edo period for the daimyo (feudal lord), the garden features six ponds and thirteen landscaped hills in front of the green vista of Mt. Shiun, along with stunning rock arrangements and a wide variety of beautiful plants. The garden was designed to be leisurely strolled through, and each step offers a new perspective on the garden's scenery.

This afternoon, perhaps embark on an optional Pilgrim tour (own expense). Visit entsu-ji Temple, an oasis of spiritual tranquility. Zentsu-ji temple has the largest temple complex among all temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, housing seven temple halls (or shrines), and a pagoda. The temple grounds cover about 45,000 square meters of land within its gates. Guided by a Pilgrim (Ohenro) expert, explore the sacred grounds, delving into the profound significance of the pilgrimage. At Konzo-ji Temple, partake in the Osuna-Fumi experience, a Buddhist worship ritual It is said that one can receive the same benefits and blessings of doing the entire Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.

Your exploration starts with a drive from the port to Hagi Old Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hagi Castle Town is an impeccably preserved example of a feudal Japanese town. Hagi Castle was built by Terumoto Mori in 1604 and over the next 260 years, Hagi Castle Town prospered as the center of the clan’s operations. Unearth Hagi's industrial history at the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace, a legacy of the Meiji (1868-1912) Industrial Revolution. Then, head over to Yongdusan Park to explore a mountain shaped like the head of a dragon, rumoured to have defended Busan from oncoming enemies. Delve into the history of feudal Japan by visiting one of the 12 original castles, meaning that its main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. Constructed over a period of 5 years from 1607 to 1611 by Yoshiharu Horio, a feudal lord and founder of Matsue. Matsue Castle was completed as a fortress with thick black walls on strong stone walls. Next will be a short walk to the Matsue History Museum, located east of the castle. Designed to resemble a samurai residence, the museum features an in-depth view of the history and culture of the castle Matsue over its 400-year history. As a museum with national treasures, one of its collections contains the talismans (also designated as a National Treasure), showing the completion year of Matsue Castle’s construction.

Later this afternoon, perhaps select to discover the artistic side of the region by visiting the Adachi Museum of Art, (own expense). This renowned institution is celebrated for its exceptional Japanese gardens and extensive collection of modern Japanese art. Established in 1970 by Adachi Zenko, a passionate art collector and successful businessman, the museum began with Zenko's personal collection of works by prominent Japanese artists like Yokoyama Taikan and Hashimoto Kansetsu. Over the years, the museum has expanded its collection through acquisitions and donations, solidifying its status as one of Japan's foremost repositories of modern Japanese art.
