Majestic Rose Gardens of the UK Hosted by Paul Zimmerman

Paul Zimmerman invites you to join fellow rose enthusiasts on a spectacular tour of some of England’s finest rose gardens. Meet private garden owners, who will be delighted to show you their gardens at the peak of their flowering season. This tour also includes a day at Peter Beales Roses, where hands-on workshops will improve your gardening know-how. You will also enjoy an unforgettable evening of gracious hospitality at Coughton Court.

Depart London at 10:30am from The May Fair hotel and travel to Cambridge. While here, we stay at the University Arms Hotel. Visit the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, where we discover plantings designed by Graham Thomas, who devoted himself to the development of the rose. We return on foot to the hotel, with time to settle in before dining together at the hotel’s restaurant, Parker’s Tavern.

Kiftsgate owner, Anne Chambers, will guide us through the superb gardens here, while telling us about the three generations of women who have made Kiftsgate a destination for rosarians all over the world. Nearby, we visit Hidcote Manor Garden, owned by the National Trust. Enjoy a short introduction to Hidcote, during which we will learn about the gardens and their designer, Lawrence Johnston. Then explore the immaculate gardens independently and take time to have lunch here. We continue to Broadway, one of the Cotswolds’ prettiest villages. Here we check into the Lygon Arms Hotel with plenty of time to settle in before dinner.

A short drive brings us to Broughton Castle, the medieval manor house that has been home to the Fiennes family since the 15th century. Explore the formal gardens, which reveal roses at every turn. Afterwards, enjoy a light lunch in the castle tea rooms. We then continue to Morton Hall. A guided tour of the gardens is followed by afternoon tea with the owners, René and Anne Olivieri. A fine collection of old roses, as well as English roses, blend harmoniously with further stunning displays of perennials leading to the property’s splendid Georgian house. We return to our hotel for dinner this evening.

Moor Wood Farm features the National Collection of rambler roses. The Robinson family are passionate about the environment. Their dedication to the roses, wildflowers and wildlife found throughout the garden and the farm’s wider grounds reflects this. We enjoy lunch at the local pub, The Bathurst Arms, before continuing to Springfield House, in the heart of Broadway. Owner Karen Bloch will meet us to talk about the property’s rose garden, which she and her husband planted in the 1970s. After some free time to explore the village, we meet back at The Lygon Arms for dinner.

We travel to Spetchley Park this morning for a guided tour of its gardens. At this time of year, one of the country’s largest private collections of peonies comes to life here. The peonies were collected by plant hunters, including Ernest Wilson, for the famous Victorian horticulturist, Ellen Willmott, who is said to have cultivated more than 100,000 plants. This afternoon, we travel to Coughton Court. The owners, Magnus and Imogen Throckmorton, guide us through the magnificent property’s beautiful walled garden, where many rose varieties can be admired. We are then invited to dine within Coughton Court’s stately, wood-panelled dining room.
