Canterbury Springtime Gardens & Hanmer Springs Fete Hosted by Moa Tours

Moa Tours Presents - On this springtime New Zealand garden tour the blooms are at their very best. You’ll enjoy private farmhouse lunches with country hospitality from the Hurunui to Banks Peninsula. Among the numerous highlights are lunches at Flaxmere Farm and Akaunui Homestead, and the gardens at Fishermans Bay, Giant’s House and Ohinetahi.

On arrival in Christchurch at 10:25am we drive north through Waipara to lunch with Penny Zino at Flaxmere Farm, Hawarden a six star Garden of International Significance. Penny has devoted 50 years to creating this beautiful seven acre garden on a terraced riverbed. Later in the day we continue through the Hurunui farmlands to Hanmer Springs, our home for two nights. We dine out this evening.

After a leisurely start at Hanmer this morning we explore three very different farm gardens of the Hurunui – visiting Doreen and Michael Dryden at Loch Leaven, enjoying a picnic lunch with Vicki Collett and Andrew Dalzell at Coldstream and meeting Anita and Richard Todd at Saddlewood, In the afternoon we return to Hanmer in plenty of time to enjoy a soak in the hot pools or check out the boutique shops.

Stroll around the Hanmer Springs Fete held in the historic Queen Mary Hospital grounds. Browse the stalls of fine arts, crafts, local wine and food and lunch at the Fete. In the afternoon we drive over to Banks Peninsula to Akaroa to stay two nights in Akaroa and dine out both evenings.

We visit Jos and Stew Howden’s Potter’s Croft garden and lunch in Akaroa with John and Lesley at Blythcliffe House built in 1857. In the afternoon we visit Josie Martin’s Giant’s House, a six star garden of international significance, where the garden is alive with amazing sculptural mosaics.

We meet Katherine Fraser at Coombe Farm garden in Takamatua Valley then drive to Fishermans Bay along a dramatic cliff top to lunch in Richard and Jill Simpson’s garden of National Distinction. We call into Barry’s Bay Traditional Cheese shop then return back over Banks Peninsula to Methven where we stay two nights at SkiTime Lodge and dine in.

Close to Mt Somers we visit Sara and Paul Grigg’s garden at Surrey Hills. A lake and woodlands are features of Carolyn and Donald Williamson’s Coniston Gardens with vintage, classic cars and farm machinery collections. At Akaunui we relax over a long lunch with Ian and Di Mackenzie in their historic farm homestead set in magnificent gardens.

From Methven we head to lunch at The Store, Tai Tapu then continue to Governors Bay to the late Sir Miles Warren’s stunning Ohinetahi for afternoon tea. There’s time to wander the estate’s galleries, sculptures and 1.25 hectares of garden on the shores of Lyttelton Harbour before departing for Christchurch Airport. finishing approximately 5:00pm
